I did NOT feel like sewing today...

Addie picked some fabrics for a dress many months ago. I managed to get them home and then promptly forgot about them. They remained in the abyss that is my fabric stash until today. Today Addie told me she wanted a new skirt.

Today I wanted to sit on the couch and veg after a busy day...

Today Addie's fabric popped into my head. Quickly I sketched out two skirt designs that I wanted to work up...for later.

Then I tried to sit down and catch up on the Olympics. It didn't work. Couldn't get those sketches out of my head. So I got up. Arranged my "tools" and got to work. It didn't take long for me to get sketch #1 out of my head and onto a hanger.

Today I made this:

Tomorrow I'm watching the Olympics.

A Sweet Project

I was asked to make party favors for the baby shower of a sweet friend, by another sweet friend. Got that? A lot of sweetness going on here. Unfortunately, this project is TOP SECRET, okay maybe just SECRET. Look, I even took the name off of the invite. Serious. I just love fabric shopping and couldn't wait to share what I found with you! I'll post the finished project in a couple of weeks.

I know. I know. I'm making a habit of these long silences. I just haven't been in a crafty mood lately. Today though, I got the bug, got out my box of ribbons, and got busy creating hair clips/bows.

Oh yeah. I've also been crocheting dish clothes. Random, I know. I was stressed out one day and decided I needed to do something mindless. I used a nice 100% cotton yarn. I found a pattern off of the internet (it is basically a single stitch with an open lace pattern on each end) and whipped out a few in a couple of hours. Here is one hard at work:

Chastidy, I LOVE my little blue Janome. Until recently I sewed on an old, heavy Singer. I actually purchased the Janome because I needed a machine quick (my Singer broke down in the middle of a project and I didn't want to have to "shop" around for a big, expensive machine) and the price was very right. I figured that once I had it I could take my time shopping for my "real" machine. I wanted my new machine to be more portable and easier to store, which this one is. I wanted it to be easy to use, without a bunch of stuff I wouldn't use...check. I haven't found anything that it CAN'T do yet. It powered through putting a lightweight quilt together, so seems to be powerful enough (for me, at least). I haven't quite figured out why I couldn't find any reviews, etc. But seems to be due to the fact that it is a Kenmore with the Janome name. Hmm. I'm beginning to think that I won't need to get another machine, because I really like sewing on this one. Hope this helps.

My first project on my new machine was to put together a quilt top for Lutheran World Relief. A lovely group of LWML ladies at my church puts together many of these quilts each year. I know it's a little loud but will definitely hopefully bring a lot of warmth!

I'm finding out that sewing machines are like cars...everyone has their favorite make & model. But by far, I received the most positive feedback about Janome machines. Well, I finally purchased a new sewing machine, a Janome 1913. I will most likely be buying a bigger, more expensive machine in the next couple of months, but this one will be perfect for when I want to bring my sewing machine along with me (it only weighs 11 pounds!). Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Phew. It is finished...almost. That's right. ALMOST finished. I still have to complete a little bit of hand stitching around the zipper, and inside the lining. What a big challenge this bag was for me. I really am happy with how it turned out despite all the little quirks that got sewed in. I added the little fabric flower to spice it up a bit...what do you think?

Because I Matter Challenge--June Project

Because I scored a loaner machine from my very sweet friend Phyllis, I was able to finish my June entry for the Because I Matter Challenge over at Tracey's. This little organizer is the perfect size for all of my quilting and small sewing tools. It is lined with fleece so it is perfect for safely securing needles and scissors. Next month maybe I will dream up something bigger for myself, but for this month, I kept it simple.

My sewing machine died last night. It's got some kind of timing issue. It has been a great sewing machine, but last time that I had service done on it, I vowed not to spend and more $ on it so I guess it's time for a new one. I don't mind buying a used one, but really need a work horse...anyone have advice?

Sneak Peek (TRACEY, DON'T LOOK!)

Drum roll please. I finally got started putting together Tracey's bag from her swap that ended a million years ago. Amy Butler's Weekend Bag. I got a little farther tonight and completed the piping around the front panels and attached the zipper. It isn't nearly as complicated as I feared and I am so happy with how it is going together. The stripes matching on the front panels is a total fluke...and they don't match up one bit on the zipper panel, which may look funny. So this is a sneak peek:
I haven't given up on quilting yet. I'm also still stitching away on my pink quilt. I really enjoy the actual quilting part and slowing am getting better at it. Addie's toes will probably peek out from underneath by the time I get it together. :)

Squares & Skirt for Addie

TA-DA!

All but one of my homework squares are finished now. I will be working on getting borders on and then will start quilting. These squares represent HOURS of seam ripping...especially that silly 8 pointed star. I now have a much deeper appreciation for the hands behind all those quilts I own and see in shops.

After this week's overwhelming class where we learned about different quilting stitches and techniques, I had to go straight home and work on something that I was comfortable with. So I made Addie this cute little skirt from Bananafana out of the princess material and ribbon she picked out at the store recently. I have some beautiful fabrics to make a few more skirts from this pattern, but had to make this one first. It turned out SO cute and was SO easy.

Quietly Quilting

I've been spending those few precious hours after the kids go to sleep, working on my quilting class homework. I finished four blocks last week (pictures soon) and now have two more to do before the next class...eight point star and drunkard's path. I have enjoyed the cutting, piecing, and ironing--I think it really appeases the control freak in me. Okay quilters out there...why, when, and where do YOU love to quilt?

Blooming Gifts

It's Teacher Appreciation Week at J's school. This is what we came up with for his four awesome teachers. I actually bought a very similar pin recently, and planned on buying more for these gifts, but I ran out of time and was forced to make my own. :) Mine are a little less shabby-chic (it's the OCD in me) and a little more symmetrical, but I think they turned out so sweet. Jackson instructed me to pick out "beautiful orange fabric." I'm not a super fan of orange, but I love all of these fabrics. The top two look red/pink in the photo, but they are really orange. What do you think?

Triangle Squares-

These are the last of the units for this week's homework. I still need to trim the triangle squares and then piece together two blocks from these squares. You can see my favorite tool...the princess pencil. I thought it was appropriate to work on Addie's quilt!

I completed 2 more units tonight! I'm saving the triangle units for tomorrow. Once I get those units finished I'll piece together my two 9-square blocks. I am having fun learning about "quick piecing," and am getting better at lining up the seams.

Now that the marathon is over I can get back to my sewing! You can read about my marathon experience over at the family blog (link to the right).

This is part of my homework from a Quilting class that I am taking with my friend Linda. This is my very first block ever...the Rail Fence. The blue one is the sample I took from class, the pink one is mine. I'm pretty happy with it except that the center seam is a tiny bit off. Can you tell what's on the fabric? Cupcakes, polkadots, & flowers. Can you tell who is going to receive the finished quilt? You guessed it, the number 1 pink lover in my house...Addie.

Two more blocks to go before class next Tuesday. I'll post pictures when I get them together.

Look What I Got!

My sweet friend Linda made this beautiful apron for me. Linda tackled her first sewing project at the apron class I hosted a few months ago...and has really taken off with her sewing. Can you believe she's only been sewing for a few months?! She brought this to me today with a sweet note, and I just can't tell you how happy it made me. My eyes were full of big watery tears as I tried it on. The fabric is a FAB Amy Butler pattern that I just adore. What a treat. Thanks, Linda!

Flower for Addie

These flowers are from Amy Butler's Uptown Handbag pattern. I just LOVE making these. They require a very small amount of material and take just an hour (if that) to make. I attached this one to an alligator clip and stuck it in Red's hair. She likes it enough to let me take her picture.

Yep. I am supposed to be making some headway on my project for Tracey's We the People Swap #4...Have I? Nope. I was never a procrastinator, so I'm not sure why I'm having such a hard time getting started. I have the best partner (it's Tracey!!!) so I want to do an extra good job on this bag. Hmmm. I will get started soon. Maybe tomorrow. :) I'll keep you posted on my progress.

I did make these really cute frogs for the kids' Valentine's Day gifts. The pattern is Frog Patch from Me and My Sister Designs. I am by no means a quilter (although the stuff Marlene does could make me try to be), but MFFS (my favorite fabric shop) has one of the frogs made up and the kids just love holding him...so I broke down and bought the pattern (it's actually a quilt pattern). Basically you piece together the top, quilt it, and then assemble the frog and fill it with poly pellets. They turned out pretty cute.

Also, I will post some pictures soon of a dress that I hope to finish up for Addie soon. I've been working on it for ages...but I'm almost there!!!

More Aprons & Stuff

This was a gift for a baby shower. I made a burp rag and nursing cover from this cute pink & yellow Amy Butler fabric and then tucked them inside the bag I made from Amy Karol's book. We were requested to bring gifts unwrapped--and I think this turned out to be a cute way to package all the goodies.

This apron I made as a gift for a friend. I was supposed to work on it at the apron making party that I hosted--but I just finished it. It is the same pattern as this apron that I made awhile back.

The boys sporting their man-prons that I made them for Christmas. Of course these are only for manly uses like grilling and making pancakes.

I have a handful of projects that I hope I can give as Christmas presents. This apron was the first one on the list. I made it from an old tablecloth of my grandma's and will give it to my mom. Some of my favorite things about this project is the off center "V" at the top and the light stains from Easter egg dye (we always go to my grandma's for Easter). I think it's a beautiful way to preserve something we otherwise would not use or see very often. I used a square tablecloth and and Indygo Junction pattern.

Thankful not to be Cooking Apron

That's right. I am not cooking one thing for Thanksgiving. I made a pecan pie earlier in the week and will make a pumpkin pie with J later, but tomorrow, nothing. Our dear friends in Tahlequah invited us out to their family's feast. I made this apron for Joan, who is hosting, with that same Indygo Junction pattern (or rather inspiration from the pattern, as I still haven't BOUGHT it) I used for Marlene's fall apron. It is reversible. One side is made from Moda charms (can't remember the name) and on the other side we made hand turkeys with the kids' hands. I think it turned out pretty cute.

I found this pretty apron pattern at my fabric shop last week. It is the Lilly Apron from Busy Bee Quilt Designs. I used fabrics that I found from the 50% off room. It really took no time at all and I love it enough to post a picture of my backside to show you just how cute the back is. My 4 year old helped me take pictures of it today.

My partner Becky from the We the People Swap II sent me these wonderful fabric organizers. She sent her first and second "attempts", but honestly I love them both and couldn't tell you which was the first. The striped one has the cutest applique on the side. I've already put them to use and had to empty them out to take this picture. Becky also included a lovely, matching pin cushion (also in use) and this pattern for car organizers...which I really need to get made and in my car. Thank you, Becky!

Oh Baby!

When it comes down to it, my favorite projects are always baby things. I think that's why I enjoyed these two projects so much. The green baby blanket is patterned off of Amy Karol's scalloped blanket in Bend the Rules Sewing. I made it a bit larger than the pattern and also quilted it differently. The fabric is Michael Miller. I really like this pattern and will definitely make it again. The other project was nursing stuff I made for a friend to give to her friend (follow that?). I had her pick out a yard of the fabric of her choice to make a nursing cover (rolled up in the photo), bib, and burpie. Cute, huh?

A Little Organization

I am not a scrapbook person. I love the papers, embellishments, and endless possibilities...but I'm just not good at putting that all together. That being said, I LOVE these awesome acrylic albums from D.Reeves Design House. This is the Pink Mini Style File. I was so excited to find Avery products (Dividers Avery 11102 and sheet protecters Avery 75201) that fit perfectly this weekend. I was able to organize all my magazine clippings and random things I've cut out for inspiration into five categories: Activities, Crafts, Seasonal, Recipes, Home & Self. Then I just filled each section with empty sheet protectors so that I can add more ideas. One day I'll peel off that brown paper and cut loose with creative genius...

I promised a picture of Addie in her cute new apron. She loves the kitten buttons! Any time she sees that I'm wearing my apron she runs over to the pantry, points at hers, and says: "Addie's!!!" It is a size 3--should fit her for a long time. I made a new apron for myself...this isn't a great picture of the entire thing, but you can see the neckline and the fabric (and my funny frowny face!).

A Very Little Apron

J is at his Granny's today so I took advantage of the day and made this! After making all those adult aprons...this thing seems so tiny! I thought it was time for Addie to have her own apron since she loves wearing mine so much. I used a Michael Miller check fabric. The white fabric that I used to make the bias tape has stars on it which added a bit of personality to an otherwise boring trim. I'll put a picture of her wearing it--she's sleeping now. Ahhhhhhh!

Halloween In July Swap--Marlene, don't look!!!

This has by far been my favorite apron swap yet. Maybe it's working on cool colored fall fabrics in this 100 degree heat, or receiving THE cutest apron ever from a sweet & obviously talented lady in Arkansas...whatever the reason(s) I had a blast participating. So, without further ado...pictures:

This is the apron I received. Isn't it so charming? The kids love it and have wrinkled it thoroughly from putting "Halloween things" in the pockets. I tried to put it away but they won't hear of it...so it hangs on the back of a chair receiving lots of adoring looks. Oh yes, and I love it too! Marlene also sent some cute scarecrow napkins, recipes, and cross necklaces for the kids. Addie wears hers until naptime and then wakes up pointing at her necklace saying, "Addie's!"

This is the apron I made for Marlene. I went through a couple of patterns...but nothing really clicked until I found a terrific bundle of precut 5 inch Moda fall fabric:Pumpkins Gone Wild. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it, only the shop was out of the pattern I was looking for (Indygo Junction Kitchen Charm), and wouldn't get it in for a couple of weeks, so I made up a pattern using the picture. I'm shipping it off to Hot Springs on Monday.

A Wee Redheaded

I finally got my act together and finished these bibs and burp rags for my friend Beccy who recently had a baby girl. I am really happy with how they turned out. I found these on Val's blog and ran over to Chickpea to download the pattern today. I made 3 of them with matching burpies in no time at all. I hope she likes them!

Back at it

After a brief hiatus from sewing I finally made this jumper for Ms. A. I found the pear fabric at my favorite quilting shop a while back. As soon as I laid eyes on it, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. The striped fabric came in one of my scrap swap packages.
I discovered that even though I have a nice organized room upstairs for sewing, I prefer to cart everything downstairs so that I can be in the middle of things. I had been using a chair to stack all my supplies but found this great bag yesterday. It is meant to hold a sewing machine on the bottom, but mine is too big. It is just the perfect size to hold all of my current fabrics and patterns. In the top bag I put all my notions and tools. I wheel it up next to my sewing machine and have everything I need at my fingertips. When I'm finished, I just put everything back in the bag and wheel it into a corner. I love it!

I received both of my scrap swap packages this weekend. Each package was such a treat to open. Sabrina's(bottom photo) arrived first and included lovely color coordinated fabrics all folded in neat little bundles. Joanna's (top photo) included two gorgeous Vera napkins, ME needle case (so cute!) and some great prints. What a fun swap! Thanks to both of my partners who were more than generous with their great "scraps." I can't wait to put them to some creative use.

I finished up the apron for my FAS partner last night. I used the Kaleidescope pattern from the A is for Apron book again. I really like how it turned out and hope my partner likes it too. I really like the pocket as the pin tucks make it very roomy. So now that my apron is finished, I can get started on some personal projects that have been patiently waiting. I found some really cute dishtowels to make aprons from the Bend the Rules Sewing book. I'm going to make Ad an outfit with this pear fabric that I found on clearance at my favorite fabric store. Diane over at D. Reeves Design House sent me this fabulous style file recently. I'm going to use it to file magazine clippings and such. I've already started to fill it up, and once inspiration hits, I'll get to work on the outside. And I'll finally get those snaps put on Jack's pirate shirt...

Phew! I sent out my Scrap Swap packages today as well as the Apron Angels apron. I am almost finished with my Flirty Apron Swap apron and then I'm going to take a little swap break. I have some other projects I'd like to finish for the kids and the house. I do love this swap thing, though. Remember the bag I made my partner for the Bend the Rules Sewing Swap? Apron Angels

I sent off my Sassy apron this morning (phew!) and finished this apron that I made for Lucy's Apron Angels. I used a vintage McCalls pattern that I bought on Ebay a few years ago. The balls around the pockets didn't turn out quiet as I envisioned, but sure make it fun to bop around the house in (I gave it a test spin). I also made my own bias tape for the pocket--which was a first. I'll mail this Monday and then get started on my apron for the Flirty Apron Swap. I also nearly finished Jack's pirate shirt, just need to pick up some snaps. I have a few other summer outfits I want to sew up for Addie. Better get busy!

SAS Swap Count Down

Another Apron

I made another apron from the A is for Apron book that I'm so in love with right now. This pattern is called Kaleidescope and came together for me like a breeze. I had some frustration making the Summertime Blues apron, but this project was so simple and fun. I really enjoyed creating the 30 pintucks in the waistband and think they really add a little sophistication. I made this for a friend who had a rough week...and hope it cheers her up a bit.

How did I ever live without this handy (and stylish) apron? My BFF made this for me and hand delivered it this past weekend. This little helper is chalk full of details, including pockets that slant to the sides to prevent pens and tools from stabbing when sitting down. On top of it all...it's super sassy and fun to wear! I was so surprised to find a package on my porch this morning. My partner, Vicki made the loveliest apron and included some special goodies as well. I had mentioned about J's & my love of baking cupcakes--I was so delighted to find a Wilton cupcake decorating set, super cute cupcake papers, a cupcake book (wow!), and some coordinating tea towels. My son thought that someone had sent HIM a present and quickly decided that we should make cupcakes...so we did. I used my new tips and wore my new apron. I captured some of the sweet details of the apron in the photos below. I didn't get a great shot of the hem--it is scalloped with white biased tape trip. I love the tulip shaped pocket , rick rack, and daisy buttons. Thank you, Vicki!One of our cupcakes...there is a little fingerprint to the left of the "starfish" as J called our decoration.

I haven't been able to dig into my swap projects this week due to my eyes still recovering from Tuesday's LASIK procedure. I did manage to get some things accomplished, though. I am making a few aprons out of the "A is for Apron" book--I have the fabric picked out (pending my partner's preferences )for the Independence Day themed Flirty Apron Swap and patterns ready for three. I also (once again) got my craft area organized and was SO pleased to get my peg board installed today (what a handyman my husband is!). Whipped up a couple of dog collars out of Amy Carol's Bend the Rules Sewing book that I'm so fond of these days (I finally broke down and bought my very own copy). My mom's dog, Hans, is modeling one in the photo. My peonies are out in full bloom right now and I am just loving it. The light pink ones are probably 60+ years old and were transplanted from a very dear childhood neighbor's yard (thanks Mom!). Jackson and I put this plant together for his Grandma who had surgery recently. Jackson had so much fun arranging all the button "stakes." I think it turned out so cute.

My mom is going to the beach this weekend and I am trying to make her a pleated beauty bag before she leaves. I got the pieces all cut out today for the PBB and also this little fold over bag, which I think turned out really cute. My partner from the BTRS swap made me a larger version that I absolutely love (makes a terrific bag for a diaper change!). Now I gotta get moving on the big mama bag... a little bit more of a bear than this sweet little thing.

My final project before our trip: the Wee Wonderfuls Spaceman. I had so much fun putting him together. Last night, the kids in bed, David at work, I sat down at my machine with my Diet Coke and Ray LaMontagne and went to work on Jack's newest space themed pal. My favorite thing about him is the Richard Simmons-ish spacesuit fabric. This little guy is big on flare! Of course, all the fabrics were carefully chosen by Jackson.

(Pant, pant) I have been on a marathon sewing binge...but I am really enjoying getting some projects finished that have been sitting in my "to do" basket for way too long. I finally got that little chicken I embroidered a while back on a little dress for Ad. I still have to put together the matching bloomers. This is a really great (& classic) pattern for a summer dress--reversible, no hems, no buttons, zippers, or snaps. NEXT!

Wee Wonderful Bunny

I zipped through this bunny last night while watching Atonement (a good movie, by the way). I finished her dress this morning. The pattern and instructions I got from Wee Wonderfuls were really easy to follow, which made this a nice relaxing follow-up project to Addie's monster Cinderella dress. Addie hasn't seen her yet, but I think she's going to love this sweet little bunny.

I finished my swap bag last night. I am mostly happy with how it turned out. I had wanted to put a button closure on the top, but I forgot to do it. Next time. I added a few heart buttons above the birdies--I kept staring at the embroidery thinking it needed a little something extra, I think the buttons do the trick. I can't wait to send it off to my partner, but have a few more things to put together before I do. Today I'm going to start on Addie's Cinderella dress for Disneyland. How fun will that be? I'll let you know.

Even though my weekend was busy, I did get a start on my Amy Karol swap bag. I sketched out the embroidery pattern last week (inspired by my tennis shoes), measured & cut out pattern pieces, embroidered front panel, and pieced together bag & lining panels. I still have a lot of work to do, but happy to get started!

Wee Wonderful Robot

I picked up this pattern at Wee Wonderfuls awhile back. Jackson was SO excited for me to put his robot together. He drew lots of smiles and giggles from shoppers at JoAnn's while he stood in front of the fat quarters trying to pick out the fabrics (he got a wee bit bossy). The control panel fabric was the first one to catch his eye and he told me, "this looks just like a control panel!" Not only did he pick out the fabrics (and what body part they'd serve) but also all the embellishments. He and I went through my jar of buttons searching for just the right ones. It turned out pretty cute for my first go at it which speaks volumes for the pattern & instructions. As always, there are a few things I'll do differently the next time. When I finished him last night, I called out to Jack: "Jack, your robot is done, come see!" A little face peeked out from around the corner and Jack asked: "Is he good or bad?" After I told him that "robots have to do whatever you tell them" he warmed up to his new friend. This morning I woke up with a Jackson AND a wee wonderful robot in my bed. Must be a hit.

Wonderful Surprise

A wonderful surprise was waiting for me today when I got home from the LWML convention in Claremore. A box--from my Pleated Beauty Bag Swap partner. Wahoo! I opened it to find the most darling bag I have ever seen. I had been secretly hoping to receive my bag before my trip to California--I can't believe how fast she finished this little piece of artwork! One of my favorite details is the embroidered owl on the front of the bag. SO CUTE! Ani also sent along a journal, stuffed owl (my son tried to steal it!), and another wonderful Amy Karol bag that she made. The pictures don't do it justice, but I had to share her work with you. I love, love, love this bag (and the other extras--looking forward to Raspberry Shortcake!) and can't wait to show it off. Thank you Ani.

Project Organization

My craft space is a mess. It is a multi-purpose room that serves as craft, office, and play space. This morning I set out to organize my craft area. I folded & stacked fabric, balled 4 unraveled skeins of yarn, and found projects I didn't even remember beginning. My favorite (and I hope, most helpful) task was bundling project fabrics with the patterns I intend to use with them. I tied them together with yarn/ribbon and but them in my "In-Works" basket. Now I am ready to get to work on the projects...

This is how things always work in my "studio," inspiration always strikes while I'm in the middle of a different project. So even though my little birdie is sitting in my sewing basket next to the cheery polka dot & stripe fabric that will soon become new Addie threads, I have challenged myself to complete the dress I have unfinished. I really don't have far to go on it, just a ruffle and hem on the bottom. I just haven't felt like ironing and hemming 2 yards of ruffle! I got through that part tonight, and hope to get the gathering finished tomorrow. Now off to bed!

I have a few new projects underway and hope to post my progress here soon. Last weekend I was inspired after finding myself at a local children's boutique gawking at the price tags on their simple, but very cute summer dresses & jumpers. I've been in a baby dress making funk (aka: burn out) but happy to get my motivation back. Last night I embroidered a little birdie to incorporate into a summer dress for Addie. My inspiration for this dress actually came from a torn bed sheet that was headed for the trash. It is bright white & super high thread count--perfect for a summer dress and too good to throw out. How very Sound of Music-y of me.
